Solar Pool Heater

Clean Power for your Pool

As well as many other uses, solar hot water can be used to heat your family pool. Both cost and environmentally efficient, solar pool heaters are a reasonable alternative to conventional methods of heating your pool. Solar collectors are used to capture free solar energy and then that heat to warm your swimming pool. After the initial start-up costs, it's a completely free method of heating pool water, and it means you use less environmentally damaging conventional fuels and heat sources. In fact, in fifteen years, you would generally have spent five times more money on heating with gas than you would to install a solar heating system today. While a solar heater will be more expensive to install than a gas heater, it is less pricey than a heat pump. Solar heaters usually cost between $3,000 and $5,000 to install.

Solar Pool HeaterAnother benefit of a solar pool heater is the fact that it can also extend your swimming season, and have you and your family swimming earlier in the spring and later into the fall months. Even Canada, which is generally a colder climate than the United States and other areas of the world, can extend their swimming season with a solar pool heater. A solar pool heater combined with a solar pool cover can add up to two months of extra floating time.

Durability is a Plus

Solar powered heating systems are also generally more durable than gas or electric heaters, and have a minimum 10 year warranty from manufacturers (although with proper maintenance - which is minimal - they can last 15 to twenty years longer), whereas many gas heaters are only protected for two years.

The solar pool heater is very simple to use and won't change the way you check the pool temperature or filter the water. Solar collectors can be mounted (and usually are) to the roof of your home or secondary structure around your house. They can also be mounted on a rack on the ground. Your pool pump (which is pre-existing) is then used to circulate water from the pool through the solar collectors and then back into the pool. On a bright sunny day, an automatic system diverts the water to the roof using a motorized automatic valve that detects the temperature of the solar collector water and whether it is a suitable temperature to use. Whether it's your energy bill, or the environment that you want to protect, a solar pool heater is a great way to make a normally expensive and energy intensive leisure item practically free.
